| | | Fieldfares Does anyone know whether its time for fieldfares to migrate ? There are 3- 400 in the nearby trees this morning. They are gathered together and twittering away as if ready for the big OFF |

| | | Re: Fieldfares I'm often still picking up a few fieldfares during my first breeding bird surveys in April though I feel these are the stragglers...
I suspect that yes birds are already on the move |

| | | Re: Fieldfares Thanks folk,
There,s no sign of them today, so they must have migrated. I,ve only seen odd ones around in this area in previous years, so I wasn,t aware of their regular movements.
If there is a fieldfare monitor on this site, the grid reference for my sighting is SP215674 |

| | | Re: Fieldfares Now is the time for them to start congregating more and moving back to scandinavia, but its often dependent on weather patterns - if there is another cold snap, they will stay with us a little longer - like Gill, I have found odd ones still here in early april when doing a BBS square.

| | | Re: Fieldfares I have spotted them in a remote glen in Central Scotland May. Does anyone know if they breed in th U.K. I am guessing that there are records of them breeding in Scotland but is this a regular occurrence??

Cheers

Largely in shetland etc, but some in more northerly scotland.
It seems unlikely that they will breed in greater numbers until they do so colonially - the noted pairs were pretty much on their own. If there is a link established in southern england by the central european population, that will probably mean a greater rise in breeding success and a potential explosion. They are currently reaching northern france, so who knows!
your bird was a good spot, but even may is not too late for scotland I suspect for individuals, before tootling off back to scandinavia.
Cheers
Ken

| | Re: Fieldfares Hi Dean,
Welcome to WAB !
I didn,t see any redwings in with the fieldfares, but there were so many birds, there could have been.
I wonder if its possible to trace the route of these birds from my grid reference ?
I,m sure the knowledgable folk on this site will know.
Regards,
