Barn owls

does anyone out there know if there are any places apart from old moor in the sheffield/barnsley area that hold barn owls?

I guess that this reply, to a three year old post, is a comment on the replies to this thread.

I would imagine that daffy66's post received no replies at the time because either (a) no one knew of any locations, or (b) no one knew of any locations that they felt should be shared publicly (perhaps a combination of the two).

I am sure that most people who use WAB do agree that details of locations where certain species can be found should not be broadcast - though in this case, because photography was not specifically mentioned (even though it may have been the intention), it may have been possible to suggest sites where Barn Owls could be viewed from reserves etc (where views may be distant, and good enough for a birdwatcher even if of little use to a photographer).

Barn Owls, like Kingfishers, are a bird species that is very popular as a 'target' for photographers - and one that can unintentionally be disturbed by them if they do not know the subject well enough.
Secrecy over the sites where they breed is to protect the birds, and for no other reason.

Is it really 3 years since i posted this??????

Never mind patience paid off and ive found a site that holds 3 flavours of owls including barn owl. totally understand why no one posted a reply though. im not disclosing this one. all im going to say is that its somewhere south of inverness and north of penzance.
as for getting a pic of one theres no chance as ive only ever seen the barn in total or near total darkness and theres no chance of me disturbing its nest site cos i dont know where that is its just an area ive found that it hunts in

Well done for finding some suitable sites to view barn owls, when I am photographing any owls, its usually an intimate thing between me and them..my best sightings I have found have been when I am out looking for something else..pleased you have got some sightings

funny you should say that because thats exactly how ive managed to both find and photograph the other owls that ive seen. going for pied fly and found a tawny glaring at me but was quite amiable in being photo'd.
