| | | Strange line in a duck's eye Any one know what this is? I took two photos of a shoveler one second apart yesterday. In the first the eye looks normal and in the second there is a diagonal brown line across the iris...
I took 30 or 40 other shots but in all of them the eye looks normal. Hope that someone knows enough bird anatomy to explain this.

(P.s. did you know that you can sing "eye of the shoveler" to the tune of Survivor's Eye of the Tiger? Well you do now!)

| | | re: Strange line in a duck's eye Hi Dave, do you think it could be a reflection? I notice in the second shot that the light refection is also different. Just a thought, but it does look the same colour as the pupil. |

| | | re: Strange line in a duck's eye Hi,
ducks have a protective transparent membrane that closes over the eye when the head is under water and I'm guessing that your shot has caught this half closed ( or half open ) over thew eye.

| | | Re: Strange line in a duck's eye I think is not only ducks, all birds have a 'third eyelid' that closes horizontally and is semitransparent, so it keeps some visibility, its called nictitaning membrane.
