| | | Re: visit to the peak district I've a friend from that area arriving tomorrow for a visit. I'll ask him for advice if no-one else comes up with anything today. He's a keen birder so may know where is best to go.
Now, how to make sure I don't forget.... |

while birds are not my no1 interest, they are both some of the birds i see (and hear!!) in both places, on a regular basis,

| | | Re: visit to the peak district RSPB Coombes Valley is in the Peak District tho I'm not too sure quite how far from Castleton it is but the wooded valley there is good for Nuthatch and Green Woodpecker! http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guid...rnet/index.asp |

Any reasonable sized patch of woodland round Castleton will have Nuthatches (if you are familiar with their calls it will help a great deal). Green Woodpeckers will be less easy, though the Edale valley just to the north of the 'Great Ridge' (Mam Tor - Lose Hill ridge) I suspect would be better. Another good woodland that would be worth a try, would be Padley Gorge, near Grindleford. It's about ten to fifteen miles away, but an excellent upland oak wood, with Wood Warbler, Redstart and Pied Flycatcher as well, in season.
Happy hunting.

| | | Re: visit to the peak district Hi Seamus,
Both should be found at the feeding stations on the Longshaw estate near Fox House. You will certainly get nuthatch's there.
As Brian mentioned, many varieties can also be found easily at Clumber Park.
Hope you have a good time ... I'm sure you will

| | | Re: visit to the peak district It's funny, but I seem to see Nuthatches on quite a few of my walks in the Peak District, especially when I'm down in any of the Derbyshire Dales.
There is a NH that feeds throughout the day, just about every day, at Fairholmes Car Park/Visitor Centre....from the feeding station that was built there.

Further up the Derwent Valley is quite wooded, so woodpeckers are likely.
Some years ago there was an excellent fish and chip shop off the main square in Castleton!
Forget Hope - lovely name for a dump dominated by a cement works!
