| | | Valentine's Day birds I always notice that around Valentines Day the birds outdo us for sheer romance, put us to shame. Today a male chaffinch was singing, though not quite full volume song, and their chasing flights have just begun, which make the Red Arrows displays look very tame by comparison. And in a tree just above one jackdaw was preening the head of its mate. The robins have just paired up. The dunnock is singing his heart out. Even the blackbird has tentatively started to sing. The blue tit pair have just started to investigate their box, removed the cobwebs from the entrance, though I've not yet noticed the male's 'blur' display flight, but I've noticed he's started to send off the chaffinches, which he always seems to do at this time of year, must be the rising testoterone levels .... There may be snow still on the ground, but the birds are thinking of the spring and babies ....
