| | | Blackcat (bird) Bully! We have 2 squirrel proof peanut feeders in our garden, I made these myself and so far they have defeated the squirrels, for several years these feeders have been very busy places in the winter with many birds visiting and feeding at the same time, especially Blue tits, Great tits, long tailed tits, greenfinches and house sparrows and we have recently noticed a Blackcap.
Normally these feeders empty very quickly and we are keep busy replenishing them every few days, however in the past week or so they are hardly being used at all and we think it is the Blackcap because we have been watching and he has been stalking all the other visitors and sending them off, so much so that the feeder is now deserted for much of the time!
We have noticed that the Blackcap seems to be perched nearby and is guarding the feeder, as soon as other birds turns up he chases them off, even when there is no sign of him he seems to appear from nowhere!
Does anyone know how we can stop this bullying blackcap and restore feeding rights to the others species? |

Why don't you put another couple of feeders up, he can't guard them all.
The only other solution is shooting the Blackcap......only joking.

Welcome to WAB Scrimper!
I have had a female Blackcap doing the very same thing, she chases off all the Blue & Great Tits and the Robin gets short shrift from her also! She has been missing for a few days so all is calm at the feeders! The Blackcap has been defending the fatcake feeder and apples that I spike on an apple tree! I have yet to see a Blackcap on the seed feeders!
Bear with it, Scrimper, I am sure peace will reign in your garden soon. In the meantime enjoy your birds, especially the Blackcap, a lovely bird! |
