| | | Blue Tits, one extra one short Hi all.
Photographed these two today. The first one is the extra. Going by the beak anyway. This one has been coming to my feeding station for a few weeks and despite the extensions to the beak is obviously managing to feed ok.
I didn't realise the second one had a bit missing until I edited the photograph and it came to light that it has lost a claw.

Can see what you mean Pippa, but the one I photographed with the crossed beak is the first I have seen with any beak problem of any sort around me and I get lots of Blue Tits at the feeders.

Roger | That is good to hear Roger.Have to admit the two i have spotted come in daily and have at least survived this past 9 months.I am assuming they are the same birds,or we have big problems. |

Roger | I can't imagine it would have any problem with the feeders, in fact it's probably surviving ok because of it. It might have more difficulty with natural food however, Crossbill also manage to eat insects and their lava despite a ridiculously inept looking bill for that type of diet. Hopefully, the tit will survive but whether it manages to find a breeding partner might be another matter.
The biggest risk will be difficulty in preening - ie. removing parasites with which passerines can be plagued to the extent it can be fatal.
