Positioning Bird Boxes

Which direction should I position my new bird boxes. I understand that north is no good as they get colder quicker.

Any ideas or does it really matter?

north or east facing I heard so they don't over heat in the summer in the winter more than one bird will shelter so they share body warmth

Yes, north to east is usually the best possition, this helps keep the nest box from getting too hot when birds are raising young. If the nest box is facing towards the mid-day sun, then the parents and chicks can die, because it's too hot.

I'd heard east.

Certainly when we're camping we like to face east. At River Dart on Dartmoor there's a camping field running north/south with high trees either side. You have a choice of sun in the morning, or sun in the afternoon/evening.

Spring/autumn we much prefer sun in the morning as it dries everything out and warms you up quickly, but you dont overheat late in the day as you're back in shade.

East!
