Stan - looks like it'll be a 1.4TC next (after the new bag).
Think I'll also be selling my 70-300 IS soon, so that should go towards the TC.

Aperture or shutter priority or auto?
ISO setting
Focusing - centre weigted or something else
Plus any other 'tips'
Hand held or pod??
Any cropping?
I have so much difficulty getting good pics of birds in flight

| | | Re: New (ish) 300mm F4 IS Thanks Bob,
I'm very much a beginner too but here is the info you want:-
Aperture or shutter priority or auto? All taken on Aperture priority at f5.6. The shots were taken at anything between 1/800 and 1/2000sec.
ISO setting All on ISO 400
Focusing - centre weigted or something else I assume you mean the metering mode? Unfortunately I haven't got my laptop with me which has the original images so I am not sure what metering mode I used. I do know I was trying different modes through the day to see what effect they had. Will try to remeber to check them at the weekend and post the results.
Hand held or pod?? All hand held
Any cropping? A couple of the shots have very slight cropping and all have been slightly processed using DPP.
The only difference to the above are the shoveller which was taken on a tripod, ISO 200, Aperture priority F8 at 1/250sec
Plus any other 'tips'. I'm not really experienced enough to give any tips other than to practice a lot and try different settings.
Obviously with BIF you will need to try and keep the shutter speed fairly high.
Hope that helps.
Maybe others on here may be able to give further help.

It's all the lens we'll ever need for years to come. | Thanks for the encouragement regarding the 100-400mm Jen, Although the bigma gives exceptional results it really requires a tripod to give of its best and now having experienced the image stabiliser for myself, I considder the extra freedom of being confident to hand hold would make the change worthwhile.
In the meantime I am having fun with the 300mm and looking forward to longer daylight hours so that I can get the most from it.
