Waterrail out in the cold

I think I was lucky yesterday - I've always wanted to see a Waterrail, but never had the chance. At our local nature park, the lake was frozen solid, so I was scattering the duck/swan food I took up there, on the ice near to the reeds.

30 seconds later, and this little guy pops out to feed.

I guess being hungry makes them show themselves much more readily this time of year.

Ha brilliant! Does anyone know if this "seeding" trick works well? For example, do you need to seed the area for a week or two for them to get used to it?

Nice photo, ive recently seen one of these quite far away from any lakes living in a small vegetated hollow.
