Which is very possible, given as Jason said, they are all finches - the disease can spread quicker in the winter as birds flock closer together to share feeding stations.
Normally, the advice is to remove all the feeders, disinfect the area and refrain from feeding for two weeks. Since this could possibly cause extreme hardship on your other birds in this cold weather, I'd suggest taking all your feeders down, giving them a good clean with disinfectant as well as cleaning the area underneath them and the bird bath - all with a mild solution of disinfectant. Dry the feeders thoroughly and put them up again in another area of the garden. Along with this, keep a close eye on the other birds for symptoms like diseased feet, runny eyes, lethargy .... if you see any more sick birds, I'm afraid removing all the feeders for a few weeks will be the only way to prevent the disease spreading through the local population. Sparrowhawk are also able to spread the disease by preying on sick finches.
Finches will be even more susceptible this time of year as many will be run down from lack of food and the cold, as well as congregating at artificial feeding stations. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
