| | | Cuckoos No, not the first report of spring .
Cuckoos have always fascinated me ever since I was a very young birdwatcher but this latest revelation is amazing .... Cuckoo chicks dupe foster parents from the moment they hatch
Note that the article mentions a Natural World programme up and coming this Friday. It should be an interesting one.

Richard | Yes indeed Richard and filmed mainly at Wicken Fen here in Cambs and the result of research work undertaken there by one of our University Professors - Cambridge City News, Cambridge local stories and the latest about Cambridge - Cuckoo in the nest

| | | Re: Cuckoos I read that the chick belonging to the Cuckoo will always chose the same species of host that it's parents used as a host when it becomes an adult.
They're an incredibly complex bird to understand.

They're an incredibly complex bird to understand. | Yes, I seem to remember reading that somewhere too.
So, for example, a Cuckoo reared by a Meadow Pipit will then parasitise a Meadow Pipit as an adult. Similarly for Reed Warblers, Dunnocks, etc.
I also recall reading that over time some host species eventually work out that they are being duped and that the frequency of parasitisation reduces.
Amazing.

| | | Re: Cuckoos I also read that after mating, dropping approximately 25 eggs in other birds nests, the adults then nip back to Africa and the fledglings head the same direction a few weeks later.
Does it make you wonder when the very first cuckoo had the brainwave of let someone else do all the rearing! Bloomin incredible I think.
