Off on a tangent somewhat, but worms are also an important part of a red kite diet. During the nesting season, I once observed on CCTV, a pair of kites bringing in worms to feed their chicks, every 5/10 minutes or so, all day!
Very common sight in the Chilterns, with 20/30 or so kites following the farmer when he's working in the field.
Re your pics. In reality, it's almost impossible for anyone to positively i.d. birds in pics like these. Unfortunately birds in photos can morph into almost any bird one wants them to become! Factors such a light, angles, heavy cropping, and so on, can play wonders with the imagination! Needless to say, I won't be having a guess!
