| | | Which Bittern? Took this shot today at farlington Marshes, Langstone Harbour. I wanted to get in both the Grey Heron and Bittern in this shot to help ID . I think it is a juvenile Little Bittern but, having never seen one before need to get some advice. I took a number of shots which I would be happy to post if this will help.
Thanks

| | | Re: Which Bittern? Love the photo, Peter - the heron and bittern have had a dissagreement!!
I think it's more likely to be a normal bittern Botaurus stellaris, the only other one really is the American Bittern - a rarity - one of which was found dead on an airstrip in the UK recently... if I remember correctly.
Nice find |

| | | Re: Which Bittern? Thanks for the advice Jason. It just seemed much paler than the normal Bittern and the light coloured beak with streaky body stripes did not seem to agree with my illustration in my reference book. Then again, remembering the problem I had with the Rook - sorry Carion Crow, it could have been a trick of the light .

Nice find | You're right it is our regular Bittern. However Little Bittern is a more frequent vagrant here than American Bittern + has possibly bred here, but is much smaller as its vernacular suggests. |
