I saw some in York today that still had summer plumage on

The black head or rather chocolate brown head is when they are in breeding plumage which will be quite soon.

I think they loose the blackhead over the winter, it becomes just a patch behind the eye. Had me fooled last year

the juveniles are the ones that usually moult their black heads later thats probably why I saw some today

This used to confuse me also and as Roger says it's really more of a chocolate brown head.
