1st Winter, winter-plumaged Laughing gull

This is a good one!
It shows some features of Franklins but on head structure I will plump for Med Gull.

The eyes have it! Laughing Gull for me too.

The white around the eye is not diagnostic for Laughing....this feature can be shown by Med and Franklins...plus a few 'non- British' gulls

This is why I live inland, so as not to have to worry about gulls.

Yes I know, but I still reckon it is between Laughing and Franklin's, with the lack of half-hood veering it in Laughing's favour.

ok, dark legs rule out black headed. Less extensive black mask seems to rule out Franklin's.


I'm going for 1st winter med gull (I think) though its difficult to tell from the shot how white the underwings are (or aren't).

I think i can see a dark bar on the tail which rules out adult laughing the underwings seem too pale for a 1st winter though I'm uncertain about 2nd winter and the wing tips do seem quite dark.......

OK 1st winter med or 2nd winter laughing

and I may well be wrong on both!!
