| | | Re: Gull I.D. pt.II ? I'm having trouble seeing a white- winged gull here - primaries look rather dark to me as do the outer tail feathers - Iceland should certainly show very light outer primaries and not such a heavily barred tail in 1w. Underwing pattern seems more reminiscent of a Herring Gull to me, as does head shape with that sloping forehead. Herring Gulls can have very pale bases in their 2cy. Bill is tricky, slim and pale based with darker tip which admittedly looks good for Iceland as could the head shape but female HG's can be slim built and Herring Gulls can have very pale bases in their 2cy. . (Glaucs and GBBGs have altogether a heavier body/bill than I can see here)
Very difficult without either clear picture of underwing or upper parts and it's hard to tell what's shadow and what's plumage! If I had to stick my neck out, I might go for 2w HG - but would want to see more pics! |

Seriously, I'm rubbish at gulls - I'll go for Iceland Gull, and a couple of Common Gulls.
Good quizzes MagpieMick - thanks! |
