Pair of Green Woodpeckers

Hi I am new to this site but wondered if any one has any idea why a pair of green woodpeckers have been visiting my garden for the last week. They spend a lot of time pecking the lawn presumably for insects, although the lawn is very sun baked and brown at the moment. Thanks for any comments. Lindy Rose

Hi Lindy Rose, welcome to WAB.

The reason your 'pair' of Green Woodpeckers are visiting your lawn now is that they love ants - over the last couple of weeks, the adult GW's have been showing their newly fledged youngsters the 'ropes' - you problably have an adult plus a youngster there - you're lucky to have them.

Welcome to WAB Lindy Rose, As Steve said, they love insects. They spend a lot of time at ground level catching insects. Your so lucky to have them in your garden!

Re: Pair of Green Woodpeckers

I have been seeing a pair of green woodpeckers almost daily for the last two weeks, they seem to be doing well with the extra hot weather we have had, I know it is a parent with youngster because when I get closer to them the parent flies off and calls the youngster, he/she carries on eating with the parents call getting more frantic and then he/she joins them.

The juveniles also have a very distinctive spotted plumage - I've put several photos on the gallery recently.

Hi welcome to WAB in case I haven't already welcomed you. The Birds Gallery is where they are at. In the meantime here is one of JeffH's photos.

Just go into Bird Photography and scroll down. Don't go into any of the sub-categories but keep scrolling past them and you will find all the other birds including Green Woodpeckers. If you only want to look at the Woodpeckers then at the top of the Bird Gallery page to the right is a search button. Click that and enter Green Woodpecker making sure that the category is Bird Photography click search and away you go.

Sorry I didn't answer your question Mrs Fish - I've only just come back to the site.
Thankfully wildone beat me to it - thanks wildone.

Re: Pair of Green Woodpeckers

Many thanks to all who have responded to my question. They are indeed an adult and youngster and I have put some pictures in the gallery should anyone wish to see them. Sorry but I can't see how to add them to this post. Thank you also to whoever added the necessary titles etc to the pictures.
