| | | Bird ID Help Required Please Hi everyone
I’ve recently come back from my honeymoon in the New Forest and on our travels around the area, I have taken a few photos of birds I don’t know.
If anyone can help ID these birds, it would be much appreciated. Many thanks!
Photos are below (sorry, the quality of some of these photos isn’t so great).

| | | Re: Bird ID Help Required Please 1= blackbird displaying some leucistic (white) feathers (male)
2= Juvenile moorhen
3= probably a common buzzard
4= same as 1 but female/juvenile
5= dunnock
6= stonechat (90% sure)
7= I think the 3rd from the left is a curlew (outside chance maybe a whimbrel). Not sure on the others - my first thought was godwits of some sort
8= another stonchat
9= That beak makes me think a widgeon in eclipse - definately have to wait for someone better for that one!
hope thats helpful |

| | | Re: Bird ID Help Required Please 1 Blackbird - slightly leucistic
2 juv Moorhen
3 Common Buzzard
4 fem Blackbird
5 Dunnock
6 fem Stonechat
7 Curlews
8 fem Stonechat
9 my first thought that this looked like a washed out Wigeon or Pintail. I suspect this may be leucistic or a hybrid.
Cheers,

With respect to 9....the bird appears to have only one set of primaries.Was it in a collection?? If so,this may account for its 'oddity'! |

Sounds like a nice day out. Here are my suggestions...
1. Turdidae > Turdus merula - m. Blackbird (showing partial leucism)
2. Rallidae > Gallinula chloropus - moorhen (This year's juvenile)
3. Accipitridae > Buteo buteo - Buzzard (common)
4. Turdidae > Turdus merula - f. Blackbird
5. Prunellidae > Prunella modularis - Dunnock
6. Turdidae > Saxicola torquata - f. Stonechat
7. Waders... sorry!!
8. Turdidae > Saxicola torquata - f. Stonechat
9. Domesticated mallard x pintail I think...
Take care,
Jason

Sorry for not replying sooner - been very busy with writing wedding thank you letters/change of name letters to banks etc (I'd never want to do that again)!
Thank you all very much for your replies - they have been most helpful.
Shearwater - 9 was actually not in a collection, that photo was taken at the local lake.
Aeshna and Gill - 9 is not a great shot, it was a very sunny day and I'm still having a few camera problems, it likes to either take photos quite dark or quite bright - can't seem to find the middle ground. Due to the amount of problems I am having with it, I am considering changing it after Christmas.
Gerel - well done! Magpie was well spotted, you must have great eyesight.....
Jason - thanks, not only it was a lovely day out, it was a lovely 2 weeks out. Think I went back to work for a rest........... | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
