Magpies

Was watching the maggies in the garden the other day , and for the 1st time saw one burying food and covering it up with earth/leaves etc , been watching the Squirrels or is this normal behaviour for them ?

Yes I've seen magpies trying to tuck stolen doves eggs under the ridges on our garage roof. They have been known to steal and hide all sorts of things. They are highly intelligent corvids and great opportunists.

I watch the crows do something similar when I'm at work. They tuck pieces of the bread that the Canteen lady throws out for them under the dried grass that the mower leaves behind. I can well believe the magpies have a similar strategy.

The magpies in my garden go one better...... they wait for the squirrels to come into the garden and start burying their nuts then just follow them around digging up said nuts and flying off with them! Crafty or what!
