| | | Going for a record Our moorhens are currently on a record in this locality. They've just hatched their FOURTH brood this year. In four broods they have produced fifteen chicks this year, whereas the pair last year produced 24 in only three hatchings.
Four broods is good going though, isn't it? |

You're sure it's the same pair though, as I've seen them nick each others nests, especially if there's a large population! |

We have all four broods visible at this moment. The amazing thing to me is how the previous broods help to feed these latest chicks. They are all programmed to help. Really good to watch. |

Four broods is good going though, isn't it? | Only one left of the current brood now. I think a cat may have had one, but I've no idea what happened to the other.
It's all a bit sad, really. |

Sorry to hear that the 4th brood has struggled . Maybe they will try a 5th brood as it is still early summer .

| | | Re: Going for a record From a documentary I watched (can't remember what or when - which is fairly typical for me!) It showed that moorhen and coot can be particularly short tempered (in the extreme) as parents and if a youngster is too persistant in it's begging it will get chastised severely and sometimes never fed again and with that many broods under their belt I'd imagine the parents have already invested a great deal of energy and perhaps are running low?
