| | | Could someone kindly explain to me what a Heronry is. Hi
Could somebody explain what a Heronry is please. I was looking on the net for places to visit tomorrow and found a place which stated they had a Heronry and it is not too many miles away from my where I live. I just wondered, what would I expect to find if I visited the place (apart from the obvious) of course .
Thanks

you will probably find that it is a set of trees near water with plenty of heron nests in them - ours currently has 9 and fledged 16 young this year and that is v. small beer - some herronrys number 200 + nests

I thought it might have been a place where humans had actually made a place for them and were actually looked after. So I am I right in thinking that they actually pick the nesting place themselves and then continue to use the same place year after year.

I think we may visit tomorrow now, I love to see Herons, but normally only see one or two and usually they are quite far away, apart from the one who visits my pond from time to time and I scare him off when I open the patio doors, I just hope that they are quite near to be able to get a decent shot.
Thankyou very much for your reply

| | | Re: Could someone kindly explain to me what a Heronry is. dawn or just after might be your best bet , herons are diurnal so they will most likely still be in "bed" if you go early enough

I was nearly washed off the bar in a landrover once too but that is a very long story.
