Being out in the field with your id guide or staring into the garden - book at hand is the best way to learn. However, I used to sit down during late evening with my guide or take it to bed with glass of wine, did wonders.
I still take my bird, plant, insect id to bed on occasion, a bit obsessive but fab nonetheless.
