Re: More Bird Photographs Needed

Wow! Thanks for the gallery Commander.

Having been brought up in a concrete/tile yard environment I am amazed at the variety of birds to be found here. Though I am familiar with some of the more common ones.
The house sparrow for instance, I recall how they drove me mad with their very loud and constant cheep-cheep (which by the way, didn,t stop when the nesting season was over) but they declined and I was surprised at how much I missed them.
I was delighted when earlier this year- a couple of years after moving to a greener area -they took up residence next door. But it was not to be, they were ousted by a builder who came to repair the roof.

I have three very large and very thick bushes in my back garden which provide a great source of entertainment.
This spring Mr Blackbird brought his new wife to view the middle bush where he had successfully reared two broods but the leaf coverage hadn,t thickened sufficiently and she wasn,t impressed. They flew off and a pair of robins took their place.
After about a week the Blackbirds came back and tried to evict them. What a battle followed, and what a warrior the little robin proved to be. I had to take my hat off to him as he fought two larger birds...and defended his wife sitting tight on the nest.
The blackbirds retired to the corner bush.

It proved to be a bad year for Mr blackbird for a pair of Magpies killed his first brood and then brought their offspring back with them later to destroy his nest completely.

Re: More Bird Photographs Needed

Stu

You gave us this list to use as a way of knowing what birds you still require to be put in the gallery. That's fine as long as that list is maintained and showing when new species are added. This isn't happening.

For my part I know I have added the following that are still showing * after the name.

Black lark
Rock Pigeon (should be Rock Dove)
Black Redstart
Rose ringed Parakeet (should be Rose-necked Parakeet)
Ruddy Turnstone (all images are of the commonly known name of Turnstone)
Short-toed Eagle
Sociable Lapwing (mine is in as Sociable Plover)
Winter Wren (is in just as Wren)
Zitting Cisticola.

You have Hedge Accentor down which we know as Dunnock and as such there are images in there of that bird.

I don't know about other contibutors but someone mentioned that they had uploaded two images of Arctic Skua so that is another image in the gallery.

Over the last few days I have added:

Citrine Wagtail
Golden Oriole
Roller
Horned Lark (as Shore Lark)
Isabelline Wheatear
Lesser Grey Shrike

I have still to add (poss tomorrow)

Ortolan Bunting
Red-rumped Swallow
Whinchat

Can we have the list updated and perhaps just show what is left instead of the long list that includes those already in the gallery.

John

Hi John.

I've updated the list with your latest info. If you get any further ones on the list, send me a PM and I'll update it.

I'll read through and search the Galleries for any other updates over the next day or so.

Much appreciated. I will be adding the last three I mentioned on the list tomorrow so you can do those if you like (if you haven't done so already).

Re: More Bird Photographs Needed

The following are already in the gallery but show a * against them.

Zitting cisticola
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...age-13461.html

Roller
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...age-19679.html

Storm Petrel
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...age-13405.html

Marsh Sandpiper
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...age-19924.html

Sociable Lapwing / Plover (we know it as a plover but if you want the title of the bird changed I can do it).
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...mage-6928.html

Whinchat
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...age-19972.html

Montagu's Harrier
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...ge.php?i=19978

I have just added the following.

Slender-billed Gull
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...age-20073.html

Lesser Short-toed Lark (not a good photo)
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...age-20075.html

Short-toed Lark (not a good photo)
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...age-20076.html

Calandra Lark (very bad head shot but you can see the diagnostic black patch under the neck).
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...age-20077.html

If they are not worth including in the data base feel free to leave them out. Unfortunately one thing defeated me virtually for the entire trip. The heat. It was anything between the mid 40C to a high that we know of, of 51C. The heat haze that was around spoilt most shots and it was also uncomfortable standing in that heat trying to take those photos.

Images from other members.

Twite (from Dai the Dragon)
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...age-18930.html

Winter Wren (Wren) many photos of this bird but perhaps this one by Digi is one of the best.
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...age-19939.html

There may be others but I haven't the time to check them out.

John

I have an image of what I believe is a Lesser Whitethroat taken at Alton Water 2 years ago. Let me know if you want me to hunt it out ;-)

Here goes with the image.

I have tried to identify this bird from my guides and Lesser Whitethroat is the best match I could find. I will bow to others experience if I am completely wrong .

Hi Paul

Is this the only photo you have. Do you have a side shot.

I can't make out what should be dark ear coverts on this bird. One of the diagnostic features for a Lesser Whitethroats opposed to a common. The breast looks a bit buffy to. I think I can also see the makings of a slight white eye ring.

From the small amount we can see I would go for a Common Whitethroat but I am open to be proved wrong - again.

John

Paul,
I think this is a female Common Whitethroat, the cap has a brownish appearance. Lesser Whitethroats have a grey cap and clean paler breast.

Here are 3 other shots taken at the same time but not processed in any way - it could be the processing that has been applied that is confusing the issue.

The reason I went for Lesser Whitethroat was because of the call and the grey/brown legs rather than yellow/brown legs ;-)

Best Wishes

Paul

Wilf,

Please see my reply to John.

I am quite willing to accept that my ID is incorrect because I'm more of an insect and flower man than birds ;-)

Best wishes

Re: More Bird Photographs Needed

Hello Paul,

After seeing the extra shots I think your identification is nearer than mine, can't be certain though. It still appears to have a buff colour tint to the breast which is a characteristic of the Common Whitethroat.

I'm the same Wilf. This bird has thrown me. I still can't see the dark ear coverts on this bird but the eye ring doesn't seem present in the first new image. The buff underparts isn't Lesser Whitethroat but virtually the rest of the plumage is.

I am now siding with Lesser Whitethroat with the new pictures but those underparts are really throwing me.
