Dark mid underwing band is clearly visibile on its right wing. Wings are long and shape is right for osprey. |

| | | Re: Bird ID Although possibly a pale/moulting buzzard, I still think it's an osprey. I think they are still migrating through. I'm leaning towards osprey simply because I feel the underwing pattern matches more closely to an osprey and there's an awful lot of white on this bird. And the overall shape looks more osprey than buzzard to me. But I'm fully prepared to be totally wrong |

I agree, I think the pale underwing with darker markings and length of the wings are diagnostic...

| | | Re: Bird ID I too would go with the buzzard. Both buzzard and osprey have a similar wingspan but the osprey's wings are more parallel and narrower in appearance, whilst the buzzard's are wider at the body. Additionally the osprey would show much lighter than the buzzard - both male and female osprey show a great deal of white, particularly the male, with the female having a more mottled chest, and against this blue sky it would be very evident, showing bright white.

| | | Re: Bird ID Another vote for Osprey. The head looks too small for Buzzard apart from anything else. Doesn't have the usual jizz of a Buzzard either.
Cheers,

| | | Re: Bird ID Thanks folks, there was pretty much the same difference of opinion on the site the photo was posted on. No other pictures as far as I know. I originally thought Osprey, but on lightening the picture it seemed rather too coloured on it's underside. It did occur to me that it might be a juvenile Osprey. |

Yes, definately an Osprey now, though comparing it with Buzzard undersides it looks similar but I will stick with Osprey

| | | Re: Bird ID I would definitely plump for Osprey. Look at the markings, wing shape of this picture for comparison. http://www.bird-friends.com/pics/Osprey/Osprey3LR.jpg
If anyone can find a closer match with a picture of a buzzard, I'll accept I'm wrong. |

Notice in your photo of the osprey that the primaries and secondaries are dark, clearly darker than the underwing coverts (the fore-wing).
