Re: Bird ID

the pattern on the underside of the wings and the overall proportions suggest its a buzzard

Re: Bird ID

Osprey.

Dark mid underwing band is clearly visibile on its right wing. Wings are long and shape is right for osprey.

Re: Bird ID

Although possibly a pale/moulting buzzard, I still think it's an osprey. I think they are still migrating through. I'm leaning towards osprey simply because I feel the underwing pattern matches more closely to an osprey and there's an awful lot of white on this bird. And the overall shape looks more osprey than buzzard to me. But I'm fully prepared to be totally wrong

Re: Bird ID

Me too

I agree, I think the pale underwing with darker markings and length of the wings are diagnostic...

Re: Bird ID

This is such a difficult one, but I think I'll go with Osprey, the wings and the markings make me think it could be. I might be wrong, it really is a hard one!

Re: Bird ID

I too would go with the buzzard. Both buzzard and osprey have a similar wingspan but the osprey's wings are more parallel and narrower in appearance, whilst the buzzard's are wider at the body. Additionally the osprey would show much lighter than the buzzard - both male and female osprey show a great deal of white, particularly the male, with the female having a more mottled chest, and against this blue sky it would be very evident, showing bright white.

Re: Bird ID

Another vote for Osprey. The head looks too small for Buzzard apart from anything else. Doesn't have the usual jizz of a Buzzard either.

Cheers,

Adam

Re: Bird ID

I go for Osprey too, the colouring looks Buzzard but the barring on the underside of the tail makes me pick Osprey.

Re: Bird ID

I count the correct number of bands on the tail for Osprey, so this is my guess.

Ooooh, this is fun

Chris, I hope you don't mind me taking the liberty of lightening up your Osprard/Buzzrey?

Anyone want to change their mind?

Re: Bird ID

That really picks out the dark band at the base of the secondaries so I'll stick with juv Osprey

Re: Bird ID

I also had it brightened in photoshop (didn't post it though, thanks Rob!) and I am sticking with osprey.

Re: Bird ID

Thanks folks, there was pretty much the same difference of opinion on the site the photo was posted on. No other pictures as far as I know. I originally thought Osprey, but on lightening the picture it seemed rather too coloured on it's underside. It did occur to me that it might be a juvenile Osprey.

Re: Bird ID

HW: LOL

Yes, definately an Osprey now, though comparing it with Buzzard undersides it looks similar but I will stick with Osprey

Re: Bird ID

Definitely a common buzzard. I've yet to see an osprey soaring with its tail splayed but that is characteristic of buzzards.

Re: Bird ID

I would definitely plump for Osprey. Look at the markings, wing shape of this picture for comparison.

If anyone can find a closer match with a picture of a buzzard, I'll accept I'm wrong.

Now that I've seen the photo lightened by Rob D, I'm going to stick with Osprey too

Re: Bird ID

You need to spend more time in the field!

Notice in your photo of the osprey that the primaries and secondaries are dark, clearly darker than the underwing coverts (the fore-wing).

Notice on the photo of this buzzard that the fore-wing (under wing coverts) is dark, clearly darker than the primaries and secondaries.

Look it up in a bird book if you don't believe me!
