| | | Natural looking feeder With all the wet weather we have had lately, I spent a bit of time in my workshop adapting a log to accommodate a peanut feeder, in an attempt to get more natural looking photographs.
I just marked out the back of the log for the size of the feeder, cut out most of the timber with a forstner bit then cleaned it up with a wood chisel, a very easy job. The feeder was then held in place with a wood screw.
The birds quickly got used to it and I got a few pictures of the first few that used it. The mistake I made was leaving two branches on the same side, the extra branch gets in the way of the subject so I have now cut it off.
Shortly after taking these pics a Great Spotted Woodpecker came to the feeder so I hope I can post few shots of him, if he stays long enough. |

| | | Re: Natural looking feeder Right guys,
Here is a pic of the small section of log I hollowed out. I used a piece of Hawthorn but and species will do, all you need is a branch on at least one side. The log I used is about 450mm long, I made it that length because I wanted it fixed to the top of the post but you could make it longer and dig it into the ground or use cable ties and strap it to a post.
The woodpecker paid a visit again but the problem is, he just hangs onto the side of the feeder and I can't get a decent pic of him.
I think I will drill some holes into the log, fill them with peanuts and see if he comes to my side and poses properly for me. |
