| | | Baby Swallow - help please I'm hoping this isn't going to happen, but had a call a wee while ago from somebody with a baby swallow on a window ledge outside her bedroom window. It's been there for around 3 hours and calling but no parents have been seen. In fact all of the swallows seem to have left.
I've asked her to leave it there for another couple of hours and then bring it in to me if the parents are definitely gone (I do animal rescue, but my forte is dogs, cats, hamsters etc, not baby birds). I know it will probably die but I can't just leave it out in the elements. What do I do now?
I'm on the west coast of Scotland (with my fingers crossed!).
Thanks for any advice (Where are you Owlmomma?)

| | | Re: Baby Swallow - help please Hi Pat, what a shame! It does seem to have been left for a long time. Are there any possible nest sites close to where it was found, barns, garages, workshops, or sheds? If not and the parents haven't returned to feed it, then I would phone the RSPCA and ask their advice, if they can't help at least they will be able to put you in contact with someone that can.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

| | | Re: Baby Swallow - help please Thanks for the reply Tracey. I've not heard any more so I suspect that the parents turned up OK. I saw some swallows near my house today so they haven't all gone after all. I'm only a few miles from where the baby was, so hopefully it was fed and flew away to wherever it is they roost for the night.

| | | Re: Baby Swallow - help please Oh that's good news Pat if the parents have turned up A friend of mine recently found a baby sparrow and asked me what to do, she had it in a box, so I said that I thought the best thing to do was to put it back where she found it. The good news is that the parents were soon there feeding the chick, but the bad news is that two days later it was killed by a cat I felt awful to be honest. I'm just so glad that your little chick seems to be okay

Pat | Here I am
I have been quite poorly so not been online much, it has been enough of a struggle just taking care of the birds but I am feeling a lot better now so I will be online again more.
Sounds like the little fella's parents took care of him in the end. I had a call almost exactly the same the other day but they never rang back to say what had happened. I do wish people would let me know either way...the times I have rushed around getting cages ready etc and then no-one turns up.
Never mind eh! |

It's very annoying, isn't it, when people never keep you up to date with animals/biirds that you're expecting in. I have the same problem and often hang around all day expecting sick/abandoned/orphaned animals which I never hear about again.
