| | | Great spotted woodpecker. Hello Im so pleased to say that I see a male great spotted woodpecker on the peanut feeder this afternoon, I quickly checked my books , couldnt go on line to WAB because the thunder storm done something to the computer and had to take tower to be fixed after the storms on wednesday evening. On checking it was a male because of the red patch on his nape, a very pretty bird, soon made all the others fly off when he came, seem a bit aggresive he had his food and went . You dont realise how much you miss your computer until its gone, wow was I lost without it. shei

Great spotted woodpeckers are one of my favourites. They really are delightful birds. In many gardens they are regular visitors and can really dominate the food. They can be surprisingly confiding too, sometimes coming as close as robins and tits once they are used to you. I had a feeding station set up in a woodland some years ago and often got both male and female birds coming onto the nuts, both being very agressive with the other birds. You could set something else up, like a log with holes filled with nuts, or smear suet onto a tree trunk. The woodpeckers will probably like that and the smaller birds might get more of a chance.
