London Garden No Birds

I have a small garden with two trees, ivy holly rose bushes fighting for space.. At the back of that is a small park with many trees . At the front of the house is an open park.
There are no sounds or sight of birds dawn or dusk apart from a couple of crows, a magpie and a tit or two. Leaving food attracts one tit.
A few years ago bird song was heard all day and birds could be seen.
What is happening and can I do anything to attract and support any wildlife ?

All you can do is put food out and plant bird-loving bushes and trees that produce nice juicy fruit and berries and attract insects and hope for the best.

Re: London Garden No Birds

Hi Norman,

I wouldn't worry too much.
I planted loads of great things this year, dug a pond, put up heaps of feeders and tables choc full of food and during spring my garden was very very busy.

Throughout July we had a few wood pigeons and a crow.
Extremely quiet.
many believe that this is a good sign as natural food supplies are plentiful and theres no need for birdies to be so dependant on your garden per se.

Also with it being so hot and humid, perhaps they're chilling out in the depths of the shady woodlands....

This probably isn't the best time of year to be getting loads of birds in the garden. Wait until winter when they'll be much more in need of your food supplies, and I expect you'll see a marked increase in bird activity in your garden.

(I don't mean stop feeding them now though!).

Agree with all the above. We have counted 29 bird species feeding in our garden over the last two years but in the last few weeks have been getting only the few resident blue tits and robin (plus offspring), blackbirds and the occasional visit from passing greenfinches. I expect them all back in when the weather starts to turn colder. So I'd advise putting up your feeders and waiting.

As said, it's the time of year, nothing to worry about. You could put out some water for bathing and drinking, if we get any more hot weather it should prove popular.

Re: London Garden No Birds

My garden was lively this spring, but fairly quiet now. I'm keeping my eyes open for signs of trich. whilst hoping it is just natural.

Re: London Garden No Birds

It does tend to quieten down once the young have fledged, no more dashing about by exhausted parents trying to keep up with the demands of hungry chicks. Spring is always a good time, because all the birds are singing their heads of trying to attract a mate, but they do become a lot more silent around this time of year.
