We were out on Monday morning on our usual yomp but took a different path down to the river. We had just seen the partridges when I saw some linnets. Up until a week or so ago, I had never knowingly seen them in our area, but, suddenly, here they are again.
This is a sprauncy male
Along with his charming mate
In a nearby hedgerow were a pair of yellowhammers; this male was brave enough to show himself
A few yards on, a greenfinch was surveying his kingdom from a vantage point
Then, to top it all, this bullfinch appeared quite a distance away. He flew towards us and into the back of the hedgerow; we waited and waited but he would not re-appear for a close-up
It is super to snap the more exotic or unusual birds, but we still very much get a kick out of seeing our small hedgerow inhabitants. (It was in this area that I also saw the lady blackcap and a dunnock - over about 100 yards)
