Dead Bird ID (photos)

Hi all

Today I had a bit of a shock at work when I found this dead bird. Nothing unusual in that i suppose but by us there are no trees for quite a distance plus we are slap bang in the middle of an industrial estate with nothing around to support the sort of bird that was dead.

I am fairly confident it is a dead juvenile Goldcrest but I am not 100% certain.

It certainly was in an unusual location to say the least.

Hello John, I think you are right, I also think it was a Goldcrest. The bird may have been dropped by a predator? - Gareth

That was my first thoughts also but upon inspection there are no puncture marks anywhere on the body, plus I have found it on the pavement tight to the wall of our offices.

We are not in an area that is usually known for predators but it has to be a possibilty I suppose.

Do you think it may have flown into a window pane. We've had 4 bird deaths by hitting our patio doors. All juveniles too. All broke their necks on impact, a starling actually broke the end of it's beak off. As to what the bird is-you're the expert John so I'd go along with your id.ww

The window hit is the more likely IMHO. The most suprising thing is not the death but the species that has died. I can't think of any habitat for this species within a mile and a half of where we are and where he was found was against a wall that would actually be taking it even further away from even that habitat.

Nothing. It is a large industrial / office estate that is all buildings, pavements and roads. No greenery, apart from the odd very small piece of privet and the odd office block that has some hanging baskets on the walls.

Re: Dead Bird ID (photos)

Hello
The other day I found a goldcrest as well and it did not look damaged.
Could it be any sickness?

I know nests may have several kinds of parasites, maybe they could transmit any illness. One day I found a small nest and I left it in my office and after some days there, some flies appeared

That is always a possibility. I can't check it know as I have got rid of it.
