new juveniles in the garden

today, for the first time in the garden, i spotted a:
juvenile siskin on the nyjer seed feeder
juvenile chiff chaff near the sunflower feeder
juvenile nuthatch rummaging through the domed feeder
(along with the regular juvenile great-spotted woodpeckers, house sparrows, goldfinches, greenfinches, blue tits, great tits, robins and blackbirds).
most curious about the chiff chaff- have never seen an adult in the garden before, though have been hearing one nearby the last few weeks- would welcome any thoughts/opinions/experiences on this particular matter..

Great stuff. Sounds like you have a very busy garden there.

Not sure about the chiffchaffs, but welcome to the site. Looking forward to hearing all about your fantastic garden. Why not post some pictures, if you can.

Juvenile Siskin would be a very good record for anywhere in the UK, welcome to WAB ArneWarm, are you from Dorset?

They are quite common where there are extensive conifer plantations with mature trees such as parts of Wales, Scotland, Brecks, etc.

Re: new juveniles in the garden

Good news on the juvenile birds! We've got the usuals as well, though struggling to keep our feeders full due to the influx of new birds

We too have the juvenile siskins, just a few, but enough to be noticed here in our area of south wales. We've been having the adults, but it was exciting to see the young.

Re: new juveniles in the garden

having watched the juvenile siskin for the last few days, i accept now that it's a juvenile goldfinch! was confused by the markings..
chiffchaff was a definite, though- many nearby- haven't seen it since- must have been attracted to the feeders by the regular birds.
based on the edge of woodland in worcestershire- was a joy to watch a large family of long-tailed tits in the aforementioned a few evenings ago- i counted at least twelve at any one time- very new juveniles, aswell as first batch youngsters and parents alike.
oh, and a kestrel visited the garden yesterday, chasing the house sparrows (left with nothing)- a sprawk darts through sometimes too!
