| | | Probable buzzard I took these pictures on Thursday at Fen Drayton Lakes. They are all very long range and have come at out as the classic black blob against the sky despite my best efforts with PS.
There have been reports of both a buzzard and a red kite in this area. Despite the 'forked' tail that I presume is down to either damage or moulting, I think this is a buzzard. I look forward to your views.

| | | Re: Probable buzzard I reckon it's a buzzard too - red kite have quite distinctive white areas on the underwing, which I can't see in these images. The middle image clinched it for me - the bird seems quite 'heavy' set, compared to the red kite which look quite delicate in comparison.
That's my guess, anyway !
p.s. know what you mean about the 'classic black blob against the sky' - story of my life when photographing birds in flight !

| | | Re: Probable buzzard I would say Buzzard too. On the second picture there is some white showing but in the wrong place for a Red Kite. Still a beauty though.

| | | Re: Probable buzzard On a couple of the shots it appears to have a pale crown though it is difficult to be sure from the photo. Also the tail seems quite long. Just as something that might be worth considering - could it be a Marsh Harrier??

This is interesting. A Marsh Harrier also visits this area. I did wonder about that but veered towards the buzzard.

In the second and third of your shots it looks like there may be a paler crown but it's difficult to be absolutely sure and I don't see Marsh Harriers that often to be certain of the overall "jizz" - I think we need a more expert birder than me before you can be sure.

Rob | I agree with you, it's definetely a Marsh Harrier, that's a nice find Colin, I only seen one once in Britain.

| | | Re: Probable buzzard I'd go for Marsh harrier too, the first shot shows it carrying what looks like a Moorhen chick, or similar - unlikely prey for a Buzzard, and you're in the right area for MH.
