| | | Stop killing birds of prey! Did you know that the RSPB has launched a new campaign to stop the illegal killing of birds of prey? Birds are still being shot, trapped and poisoned as well as having their nests raided by egg collectors. All this is contributing to a number of species struggling to maintain populations in the UK which is totally unacceptable.
All you have to do is visit the website The RSPB: Birds of prey and add your name to the pledge to help them protect these wonderful and inspiring birds so that we can see them for generations to come. |

Fortunately things aren't too bad where I am (Reading) but there are a lot of problems in Dumfries and Galloway. My wife's from the area and we try to get up at least twice a year. Every time there's a story about hen harrier's nests being destroyed; red kites & buzzards being poisoned; peregrine and raven's nests being raided for their eggs.
It looks like some of the gamekeepers up are of the old school and still regard anything with a hooked beak as "vermin" that needs to be "controlled".
I'm not sure if the campaign will be enough to change such entrenched habits, but it has to be worth a try.

I'll sign up. we've have had numerous Buzzards killed here in Lincs and that's only the ones that have been found, some Buzzards have been shot and one was on a pole trap which is horrendous and from the dark ages, a post is placed in a clearing making it an ideal place for such a bird to land but on the top has been fastened a trap and when the bird lands it snaps shut around its foot and the poor thing is in agony trying to escape until its inevitable death
