| | | Bird ID Needed Hello,
Last week I was looking at the birds in the garden, among them was a Green Woodpecker on the ground searching for grubs. There was also a bird that I have not been able to identify and would like some help!!!!
I was about the same size, maybe a little larger, as a blackbird. Generally it was the same colouring as a female blackbird, although it appeared to have a greenish tinge to the wings. This could have been a trick of the light.
It had a straight black beak, and the colouring of the beak carried on up to the eyes making it look as if it had a 'bandit' mask. The main feature was when it was on the ground with wings folded it it had a white pattern on its back which looked like a 'rib cage'. It appeared to be eating seeds from the ground. When it was on the ground it walked rather than hopped around. I did not see it fly off and have not seen it since.
I hope this is enough information for you to make an identification for me.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards. |

| | | Re: Bird ID Needed I'd agree with Jack, especially as it was seen beside an adult. Heres a photo http://www.shropshirebirds.com/2007_...cker_at_VP.jpg

| | | Re: Bird ID Needed That was my first thought, but it appeared too different from the adult. It did not have any of the markings shown in the photo. It walked rather than hopped. It was eating different food etc.
The colourings, as I said earlier were very similar to a female blackbird. The black mask over the eyes was also very pronounced. The 'rib-cage' pattern on the back was also very striking in white against the brown back ground.
Hopefully it will return and I can get a photo of it soon, but in the meantime any suggestions would be most welcome.
Thanks |

| | | Re: Bird ID Needed I've not really got a clue, but here goes! I don't know what part of the UK you're from, which makes it a little harder, but could it possibly be a hybrid Carrion x Hooded crow juvenile? I'm really just stabbing in the dark!

| | | Re: Bird ID Needed Hi, I can tell you what it's not, it's not a Lesser spotted woodpecker, because these are only the size of a sparrow.

The bird was a juvenile starling, and there was me thinking I had spotted something rare and exotic!!!! http://images.google.co.uk/img res?imgurl=http://www.denisg.c o.uk/gallery/albums/UploadsFTP 2/Birds/thumb_d7pict00000301.j pg&imgrefurl=http://www.denisg .co.uk/gallery/thumbnails.php% 3Falbum%3D4&h=160&w=130&sz=6&h l=en&start=7&sig2=08YU83qbt9Gp Adr90G0iPQ&tbnid=hAZhuqTzQBwAU M:&tbnh=98&tbnw=80&ei=9k9zSMDc Lo3k1gbDkeHjAw&prev=/images%3F q%3Djuvenile%2BStarling%26gbv% 3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG
Scroll down to find the image (it is near bottom).
The bird in this picture shows the white on the feathers, although on the bird I spotted, the white was much more pronounced, and there were no blue/black feathers.
Again, thanks to everyone who replied.
