| | | Re: Heron eats duckling Sad but natural. I've never even seen a heron go for a Carp! I'd never thought about herons having 7-8ft wingspans. What are 'Speak-like' bills?

| | | Re: Heron eats duckling I've seen them fishing and swallowing the fish and have heard they will take mammals and chicks too.. If you search for "heron" and "vole" in the gallery on here you will see Kev Lewis' picture of heron taking a vole....
Also, a while ago there was a picture in one of the papers about a pelican in St James park eating a pigeon which was very odd indeed... |

| | | Re: Heron eats duckling Isn't there a pic somewhere of a Heron trying to lift (and presumably swallow ) a fully-grown Rabbit?
Ah, just found it on the 'Amazing picture of...' thread:
I've also known them to swallow eels and the eel to bite its way out of the birds crop, yuk!

| | | Re: Heron eats duckling It was TRYING to, but given it couldn't swallow it whole, and the fact the Heron can't chew bits off I presume it would have given up.

| | | Re: Heron eats duckling I posted a thread on 13/6/08 of 'Heron snatching Mallard chick' that I personally saw and took snaps of at Tittesworth Reservoir. Now on page 12 of threads. |

| | | Re: Heron eats duckling I've seen a Heron take Eels, and once many years ago saw one take a rat!
I've seen pike take ducklings too - very strange to see the last in a line disappear in a swirl and a splash - like something out of Jaws.
