Do Owls build nests ??

My ten year old daughter has asked me today, "do Owls build nests or do they just nest in boxes and holes in trees". Something I never gave much thought to before but I promised her I would find the answer and where better to look than on WAB.

Hi Demicav.

Tawny & Barn Owls nest in holes in trees or nest boxes.

Little Owls nest in holes in trees or buildings.

Short-eared Owls nest on the ground in a scrape made in open country, sometimes lined with grass & feathers.

Long-eared Owls nest in old corvid nests, usually in conifers.

Don't know how true the following is, which I found on Google:
Long-eared owls nest in trees, usually in stick nests built by other species. They may occasionally build a nest of their own, or use a nest located in an old tree stump or on the ground, but this is uncommon.

So maybe they do build their own when they really need to

So they don't build their own nests like a garden Bird would or say a Swallow would. That's very interesting, thanks for the reply. I will let my daughter know.

Maybe they're a bit lazy .
