| | | Help - Cat raiding nest! I've just been out into my garden to find out why a pair of blackbirds were making such a noise to discover that they have built a nest in the end of a hedge. Unfortunately however, they've built it in such a place that a cat had managed to climb up into the hedge and was next to the nest. I've chased it off for now, but wondered if there was anything I could do to stop it from being able to come back and access the nest again. I can't tell if it has done any damage already but if possible I'd like to prevent it doing any more... |

| | | Re: Help - Cat raiding nest! What a pity Nikki. I had this same problem with our next door neighbour's cat eating the eggs or it might have been chicks out of our robin nest a couple of months ago. If there is still young in the nest then I would try putting some barbed or chicken wire around it so that the cat can't easily reach them but not so packed that it prevents the blackbirds from getting to it. Or even try getting a cage of some sort to put over the nest (but try and not disturb the occupants too much). Sorry not much help I'm sure there will be others with better ideas than mine good luck and I wish the chicks fledge successfully x

barbed wire is evil and could harm many animals uneccesarily. |

| | | Re: Help - Cat raiding nest! This does happen and it is part of the learning procces for the birds. Because of the cat they will build their nest in a better place next time. Sad for the chicks (unless you want to rear them yourself) but better for the future young of the black birds.

Not the nice PUDDY TAT
PURRRRRRR
No seriously i'm a cat lover but as i say my cat has one heck of noisy bell on that collar and all the birdies go run the the hills when they hear it.
More often then not a GANG OF MAGPIES are usually near to pecking the cat to death most mornings and very vocal they are about it to. |

| | | Re: Help - Cat raiding nest! Sorry, I cant see how a bell on the cat would be much use until the birds are capable of flying away from it, unless it was tied really really tightly around the cats throat of course.

| | | Re: Help - Cat raiding nest! Bells on a cat's collar must be a good thing. Really heavy ones, like one off the town hall clock, then chuck it in the canal to see if it can swim with it.
'Not the nice Puddy Tat'?, come to think of it Bouncy, I always wanted Sylvester to catch silly Tweety Pie.

If you want to get a water pistol put vinegar in it as cats hate the smell and once soaked will have to live with the odour. A little sadistic idea I had. Wire mesh sounds like a good idea. Also what about a booby trap at the location that the cat positions itself to get at the nest. Landmines may not be a good idea but what about a bit of grease so tiddles can not get a grip, attaching a bell to a branch that the feline walks on so it makes a noise to startle it or a pitbull on a bungee cord.

I've boxed the nest in with some branches which seems to be doing the trick for now. The birds are sitting on it quite happily and coming and going freely. I obviously know that bells have their limitations but if people used them more on their cats then at least adult birds stand a chance of getting away and breeding again...
Thanks for all your help on this one!
