Sparrows & Sparrowhawk

I was reading my football magazine today when all of a sudden i heard lots of singing.
When i looked out of the window there was over 15 house sparrows flying around the garden most of them fledglings.
I know there numbers are falling but we seem to have loads around here, hopefully they will continue to breed here & start to spread out around the country.

About 30 minutes later are sparrowhawk visited,he comes every few months,he stayed for about 5 minutes & then left empty handed.

Here's a few shots i took,not great,but hope u like them all the same

Re: Sparrows & Sparrowhawk

I know what you mean its the same here with the House Sparrow there are always abot 15 on the feeders at a time with more hanging about waiting no other bird can get a look in most are fledglings and juveniles, but thats all that seems to come to the feeders at the moment except for a few Starlings
Looking at your images the Sparrow hawk is more interested in your Cockateils than Sparrows

Re: Sparrows & Sparrowhawk

The sparrows around my house seem to have done OK this year. I always look out when I hear them all cheeping at the same time as it's normally a sign that the Sparrowhawk is in the garden.

Re: Sparrows & Sparrowhawk

nice pictures but be carefull of your avairy birds though, if one is resting on the side on the pen like the Cockatiel in one of your pics, a Sprawk can grab them and kill them through the wire, when we get one in the garden our birds always go very quiet and fly into their hut out of the way

Re: Sparrows & Sparrowhawk

The sparrows round my way seem to have done very well this year too. It's costing me a fair bit in bird seed, but I don't mind.

Nice photos - I hope your poor little cockatiels have recovered from the experience!

Re: Sparrows & Sparrowhawk

Hi Deer boy, lovely male Sparrowhawk there. Great photos especially the last one where he's spreading his wings. They really are stunning Birds. I agree with the others though, he seems keen on the cockatiels and a bit confused as to why he can't actually get to them.

Cheers

When ever he comes to the garden he trys to get the birds in the aviary after about 5 minutes he gives up & off he goes, but he keeps coming back

What i forgot to mention yesterday was as he was trying to get in the aviary a blackbird flew at him & almost hit him she did have a fledgling with her though
