Amazing picture of Heron catching Duckling

this is a marvellous picture from the sun newspaper of Grey heron catching and eating a very small mallard duckling, the mother duck fights in vain to save the unfortunate bird.

Re: Amazing picture of Heron catching Duckling

Herons are not to fussy about their diet. I have seen them catch, kill and eat a Weasel.
If they can catch it they will eat it.
I have even seen them try to eat a full grown Rabbits, Try being the operative word, I took this poor quality pic of a Heron trying to eat a Rabbit, he made a number of unsuccessful attempts to swallow it then gave up.

Re: Amazing picture of Heron catching Duckling

Nice catch by the photographer. I always watch closely when a brave mallard of other duckk takes her brood close to one of the herons in regents park/hyde park/ken gardens.

As previously stated (and show with a Rabbit! ) there not fussy - Ive seen them take cheese, tinned salty sardines/sprats and even bread. I read that one took a starling in Regents too! Now if only we could get them to show interest in the grey squirrels....

The Sun is not my favourite paper - but that picture
is awesome - I reckon it will pop up again in a few
competitions,
