| | | Yippee, a Young Goldfinch in the garden We had Goldfinches on the niger seed for the first time earlier this year and I have recently seen what I thought were young but haven't been too sure, I then managed to capture this pic of one of the feeders which is across the far side of the garden hung high in one of the Silver Birch trees, (I have to take it down with a clothes prop when it wants reflling ) so it was taken on full zoom with a bit of camera shake so excuse it not being perhaps crystal clear

We've had juvenile Goldfinches in our garden a couple of times recently, I'd only ever seen adults before. |

| | | Re: Yippee, a Young Goldfinch in the garden Thanks for your replies, I've now seen another one we were so pleased as we've never had them in the garden before this year, the only time I've seen them previously was a small flock on the river bank flitting about amongst the dead thistles and teasles in the autumn so hopefully they'll stay around.

I love the goldies.
The ones that visit my feeding station spend ages munching on the sunflower hearts, swinging away right next to the darn Nijer feeder!
When when when will they realise its there and chow down, I thought they were supposed to love those seeds! |

| | | Re: Yippee, a Young Goldfinch in the garden There was actually an article in Bird watching magazine last month on Goldie behaviour actually, it explained how sociable they are and how, upon finding a nice food resource, they will spread the word and chatter from nearby perches.
I think its safe to say if you have yummy grub and the goldies are caring and sharing, they'll come in flocks as big as starlings... well... maybe not that big |
