Encounter wirh a young sparrow hawk

My main interest is wild flowers but while I was out today I came across this little chap standing on a path. It wasn't too frightened by my presence and I took a few images. It eventually fluttered off under a wire fence into a wooded area. I don't think it would be in any immediate danger
It was a nice thing to happen, it will be remembered and I hope the bird will be OK.

Re: Encounter wirh a young sparrow hawk

Thanks for the replies - my son had put me right on this one a few minutes ago as I've got the image as desktop background. If you look at my threads on the wildflower forum I don't know a lot about those either!

At the end of the day it's a nice picture of another wonder of nature and that'll do for me.

The youngster was very co-operative, I was probably only a meter away.

WOW ! ~ only a metre away! I've never been able to get much closer than about 40 metres.

Re: Encounter wirh a young sparrow hawk

Yes, it was a good experience and one I won't forget particularly with the help of the images. I got 11 pics and those below are the first and last.
As soon as I realised it was a bird of prey I began taking shots and moving forward, The first shot was probably 20 m away and I feel lucky that it allowed me to approach without any hint of concern. It did watch me intently at all times. The final shot is directly from above with my feet just out of the picture.

Re: Encounter wirh a young sparrow hawk

I've been pleased to share the event with you all. On the way back to home I had the choice of two routes. the normal one a bit shorter and level but on this occasion I chose the more attractive track - didn't I make the right decision!

I suppose it might give 2 lessons:
1) the easiest way may not be the best
2) always have your camera ready because you literally don't know what's around the corner or over the hill.

Thanks for all your responses.
