we have lived in a flat for 8 years and we never seen many birds until the wife put a feeder outside in the back garden we now get numerous birds we are getting a lot of young birds sparrow sized,brown with a yellow bar at either side ,when they fly away there is a bit green tinge above the tail,what could they be , thanks

Agree with Bill, they are most likely Greenfinches, though will be much duller than in the photo if female or juveniles.

Young chaffinches can confuse too and
there are heaps and heaps of those around at the
moment

Look at the size and colour of the beak - if it pinkish
and chunky its greenfinch, but darkish and not overtly
chunky its juvenile chaffinch.
