| | | Now hand rearing tiny baby blue tits :0) We had 4 tiny blue tits brought in last night. The nest had been destroyed and they were on the ground. My guess is, the youngest is only a day or so old, as small as my smallest fingertip....scarey!! Feeding is nervewracking. Positive vibes please everyone, it will take a miracle to pull this one off I think.
All made it through the night ok, eating and pooping well.
We have them on our web cam at the moment. Picture quality not great but hopefully better later today after some fine tuning. Wing and a Prayer
Other babies also in residence; Blackbird, Starling, 2 Crows, 2 Ducklings, Dove and a Woodpecker (Greater spotted)
Not much sleep around here I'll tell you |

| | | Re: Now hand rearing tiny baby blue tits :0) Thank you. I am getting a bit more used to feeding the tiny one now. The three new ones are slightly bigger so I have them in a seperate pan in the incubator so they don't squish the tinies. |

| | | Re: Now hand rearing tiny baby blue tits :0) I do hope you manage to rear them ok, the only experience I've had rearing baby birds is with budgies, one I had to rear was abandoned by her mother just after hatching very late in the year and I had her in a small box in the kitchen with a lamp over her to keep her warm, I fed her every hour or so with specialised egg food, she even had her christmas dinner with us and the rest of the family she went back into the avairy after being able to fend for herself and lived to over 8 yrs old a very good age for a budgie but always remained tame and would sit on my shoulder when I was feeding cleaning out etc.

Will you be able to release these when they're big enough or will they have to stay in captivity. If they are able to be released do you play bluetit sounds to them now?

Barbara | They should be fine to release, I just finished hand rearing another clutch and released them last week. I don't play bird noises, there are enough in the house already! Seriously, once they are self feeding, they will go out into an aviary next to the bird feeder and there are plenty of blue tits here. |

| | | Re: Now hand rearing tiny baby blue tits :0) The four remaining blue tits are doing really well, growing daily and eating for England! Even the smallest one has it's eyes open now. Feeding about every 2 hours now and at least they are going through the night so we can get some sleep. |

| | | Re: Now hand rearing tiny baby blue tits :0) It must be such hard going! You'll have to start some kind of thread with the routine to keep to and the food to use when hand rearing baby birds. Some of us might need it in a hurry

| | | Re: Now hand rearing tiny baby blue tits :0) Yeah, could do, everyone does it different though, I have just learnt over the years what works for me and what doesn't. All the little ones are different too, depending on age and species. I will stick something general up thoug and if anyone has an emergency, my mobile number is on the website so they can get me anytime. |

| | | Re: Now hand rearing tiny baby blue tits :0) It is rewarding when it goes right, unfortunately, by the time they get here there is always a problem so inevitably they can't all be saved but the ones that survive make it all worthwhile.
Update.....now they are starting to grow and feather up, you can see that....they are not all the same. the smallest 3, I think are blue tits but the largest who came from a different place is not the same, He is coming through brown with a finch type beak so not too sure on him yet. I will post some pics and see if any of you can ID him
Very difficult when they come in as hatchlings |
