Nice weather for ducks.....

..... and for Green Woodpeckers.
It's been heavy rain in the south east today and I have seen 3 of them by the roadside in short grass. I don't think I saw 3 in the whole of last year. So that made up for the miserable weather.

No, three individual sightings. Miles apart. I also spotted quite a few orchids in various places along the roadside. Fragrent ones I think.

Fantastic birds green woodpeckers. one of my faves. i think that their numbers have increased (i haven't read this any where) over recent years. i see them around quite often nowadays. mostly fly overs, with their distinct flight pattern.

but there is one area where i see them every time i visit. managed to see adult male on ground, feeding and hopping around, beautiful plummage, especially with sun shinning on his back.

they always remind me of Professor Yaffle from Bagpuss.

I've certainly been hearing Green Woodpeckers calling a lot in and around the garden this year - looking out for young but not seen yet.
