I can confirm they are a regular sight in the Chilterns, which was the first location in England for the reintroduction of them back in 1989. The place where you saw them is very close to the core area, so we have a good few numbers of them around here.
Although it is difficult to obtain a reliable estimate these days, there are probably somewhere in the region of 350+ breeding pairs in the Chilterns.
Chicks are being translocated from the Chlterns to Aberdeen this year, as part of their reintroduction in that area.

Aeshna5 - I wouldn't go so far as to say they are so common! There are pockets of areas where they can be seen on a regular basis. However, outside the reintroduction areas, one is more likely to see just one or two, rather than the large numbers one can see on a regular basis within certain locations.
