Hi all.
Just had to tell you about this very, very lucky juvenile Starling.
I had just returned home off the night shift, 6 am and went out to top up the bird feeders as usual before I went to bed. Was having a cup of tea and watching the birds through the window.
The Starlings had been bringing the youngsters with them for the last couple of days. Anyway something spooked them all and off they went. Unfortunately one of the juvenile Starlings flew straight into my neighbours bedroom window and fell onto the lawn.
I went out to see how badly injured it was and this is where it was very lucky first time round because I got to it literally seconds before my next door neighbour but one's cat got to it. The cat doesn't normally bother the birds but I guess this was an opportunity to good to miss.
I took the bird inside and realised it was only stunned. I put it in a small cardboard box and checked on it in around fifteen minutes and it seemed to have recovered so I took it outside and placed it on the feeding station branches where I knew it's parents would easily see it.
Sure enough dad, or I think it was a male arrived within a few minutes and they started calling to each other. The youngster then hopped around to one of the fat blocks and started to feed itself for a while before taking off with dad a few minutes later.
I didn't take any photos of the youngster in the box or in my hand as I felt it would not have been fair on it but I did set the camera up before I released it onto the feeding station and below are a few shots taken moments after I released it
First dad looking a little on the anxious side
The youngster just after I released it
Sat on the fat block feeder which it did eat some of before flying off
All in all a very lucky little bird. Lucky it survived hitting the window and lucky I happened to be around to save it from the cat and help it recover. I was around an hour and a half later to bed than intended but if that bird makes it to an adult that's a small price to pay.
