| | | Garden bird selection Hi all.
Seeing as it was a very dull overcast day here in Lincolnshire at least, I thought I would try and photograph a selection of garden birds that were visiting my feeders.
As it was so dull I used the Canon 400mm f5.6L USM lens with the flash and better beamer. Although probably not the best I have taken I was happy with the results under the conditions at the time.
Hope you enjoy them
Roger
First a Collared Dove. We get loads of these and they can't half eat.
Next a Blue Tit that looked pretty smart to some I have seen recently.
The three finches Next. Goldfinch, a male Chaffinch and a male Greenfinch
Next a male House Sparrow
A handsome looking Starling, these are greedier than the Collared Doves
Finally our resident Robin who is beginning to look a bit on the rough side |

| | | Re: Garden bird selection Nice pics Ollie, I am holidaying in Florida at the mo and the wife had to do some work in a local library so I thought I would grab the chance to have a peek at the site. The wildlife here is spectacular but this just reminds me of home. There is no place like the UK. . . . Weather is great here though. 88 degrees.

The beamer comes into it's own under less than ideal conditions as it was today. In fact there was actually a very light drizzle at the time I took some of these. I was stood just inside the front door.

| | | Re: Garden bird selection great piccies ..... I enjoy watching my garden birds .... feed them all year round ......
Today I had a male a female greenfinch feeding together on the sunflower seeds ..... and lots of coal tits seemed to be eating insects off the branches of my lilac tree
I usually have quite a number of blackbirds in my garden but this year only the odd one |

I feed all year round as well. Haven't seen the Coal Tits for a couple of months now. We do get one Blackbird who actually feeds off the bird table. He loves sultanas and will practically take them from my hand.

| | | Re: Garden bird selection Nice pics Ollie, I love watching the assorted birds in my garden especially now that there are lots of fledglings about all demanding attention, mind you it's a bit worrying also as we've had a few Sparrow Hawk attacks, one I witnessed last night yet that's part and parcel of the cycle but I still hate to see and hear it. I also feed all year round although perhaps reduceing the number of feeders in the summer months but am rewarded by many different resident birds that almost seem to know me and wait looking through the windows if I'm a bit late 'topping up' |

Always seem to get one or two individual birds I can recognise and that seem tamer than the others. Our Robin will sit on the hanging table whilst I put the food out. The Blackbird with a love of sultanas, I can easily recognise him because he is a bit on the small side for a Blackbird and of course he allows me to walk right up to him without flying off.

Although the conditions were far from perfect for these one thing to remember is that these birds are used to seeing me and that makes it much easier to photograph them.
We all struggle to photograph small birds in their natural environment such as woods etc. Having the right equipment and a fair bit of luck helps but it's still difficult

| | | Re: Garden bird selection Lovely shots Roger, we have lots of Goldfinches but none visit the feeders and I would challenge your collared doves (we don't see them) with my wood pigeons for eating, they roost in the trees opposite my house waiting for food and when I put it out they are usually so busy chasing each other away that the crows and magpies fly down and steal the lot.
