Stork.....?

I'm not too good on bird IDs but I'm pretty sure I saw a Stork today in flight and being mobbed by a couple of crows.
Heron size but with what seemed to be a white body and black wings. Are storks often seen on the South coast of Ireland?

Re: Stork.....?

Certainly sounds like a white stork and no not at all frequent in Ireland. A good sighting that Jenny and worth informing the relevant local recorder about.

Re: Stork.....?

Herons do have white on their fronts and black on their wings, I think the diagnostic factor is that a stork will fly with its neck outstreched while a heron flies with it's head close to its body.

Re: Stork.....?

Thank you both - neck was outstretched so it was a stork!

How would I find out who the local recorder is?

Hmm, they can sometimes be more elusive than Lord Lucan. Try contacting one of your local wildlife groups or societies. I would expect someone there to know who they are and how to get hold of them.
