Climbing high (2000 ft) up on Grey Crags in Buttermere we kept hearing a beautiful and plaintive song from across the corrie (near Eagle Crags). Heard from mid-afternoon for about an hour - very loud and penetrating "PYOU" whistled twice then a break then repeated. Can anyone help identify from these details? |

Looked up a couple of books - that's the bird!! It even describes the call as plaintive in one of the books. Trying to put the sound into phonetics is not easy. |

Further thoughts - maybe not! Heard recording on RSPB web site - not quite the same. Any other options? |

Positive identification - it was a Golden Plover. I listened to a sound bite on wildsong.co.uk and that was it! Many thanks to Tursiops. | |
